Exploring Glaze on Glaze Combinations

Recently we have been experimenting with dipping one glaze on top of another. Some fascinating and beautiful effects can be achieved this way. However, it is not yet predictable as to the results you will get. Below are some examples. Note that all the glazes are in Mastering Cone 6 Glazes except for Pete's Weathered Bronze Green. If you don't have this one in your file it can be found on the Frog Pond Pottery web site.

In all cases below, the liner glaze is Glossy Base 1 with 5% tin oxide. We call it White Satin. The samples below were glazed as follows. White Satin was poured into the inside of the cup and poured out. The rim of the cup was dipped about 1/4 inch into the White Satin. When this glaze had dried enough to be handled, the pot was dipped in another glaze so that it overlapped the White Satin. When that second glaze was dry enough to be handled the pot was dipped into a third glaze so that just a little bit of the second glaze was left uncovered.

Firing was to cone 6 between 3 o'clock and tip touching using the firing schedule shown in the FAQs on this site.

Note how differently these glazes behave when one is on top of the other. In some cases (the first 2 directly below) the underneath glaze "breaks through" the surface glaze in small and varied spots. In other cases (see the samples with Raspberry over Bright Sky Blue) the whole color balance is shifted. In all cases note the variegated appearence of the glaze and the interesting things that happen at the interfaces between glazes. And now think about the zillions of effects you might achieve by putting one of your glazes on top of another.
