Close-Up of Sake Jar Shoulder

The colorant for this glaze, called Waterfall Brown, is iron oxide. It is an amazingly versatile colorant which has several crystalline forms. An article in Wikipedia says there are 16 known oxides and oxyhydroxides of iron. Each of those forms in the right environment will have a different color and appearance. This sake jar illustrates some of that potential very well.
